TCC-CIMET trains 34 Community Members in Soap, Cream and Bead Making for World Engineering Day 2026
As part of the 2026 World Engineering Day celebrations, 34 selected members from the Obuasi community have received hands-on training in soap making, cream production, and bead making. The initiative equips participants with practical skills to create alternative livelihoods and boost self-reliance.
The initiative forms part of a broader effort by TCC-CIMET and the Obuasi Municipal Assembly to promote practical skills development while strengthening the nexus between indigenous knowledge, science, and engineering.
Speaking at the training, Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kanning explained that this gives the participants the opportunities to do something with their hands. She explained that this opportunity is not limited to persons with disabilities since they are here to join the training.
“What you’re coming to do here today is very important. If you pay attention and approach it as if you’re learning to create something meaningful, it will help you greatly. I’m excited that this opportunity is inclusive and doesn’t limit people with disabilities, their presence here shows the possibilities in learning, developing skills, and even earning from them.,” she said.
The aim of this training is to ensure that community members are equipped with practical skills that can help them in alternate livelihoods, increase self-reliance, create opportunities for income generation and personal growth and create a more resilient Obuasi.
Facilitator of the soapmaking and cream production training, Mrs. Agnes Oppong explained that this is an opportunity for the community members to add value if they already havf basic skills and also to do something they can use in their households t save money.
“Soap is something you will need every day, whether it’s for cooking, bathing, or general cleaning. It plays a crucial role in our daily lives. Even if you don’t plan to make money from this skill, learning how to make your own soap can save you money. With just a few simple ingredients, you can create products that last a long time, giving you both practical use and a sense of independence in your daily routine,” she said.
The Municipal Assembly ensured that persons with disabilities were well catered for.
Facilitator for the beadmaking training Ms. Yusifu Mariata explained the importance of practicing skills after they have been taken through the basic process of the skill.
“Beads are very versatile, they can be used to create bracelets, necklaces, earrings, keychains, and so much more. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. But here’s the key: after today’s training, the real growth happens when you continue to practice consistently.
It’s easy to forget what you’ve learnt
if you don’t apply it, so make it a habit to revisit the basics regularly. Remember, every advanced design, every creative idea, always builds on the fundamentals. Master the basics, and you open the door to endless creativity and even opportunities to turn your skills into income.", she said.
