The TCC International Centre for Innovation, Manufacturing, Technology Transfer and Entrepreneurship (TCC-CIMET), in collaboration with the Obuasi Municipal Assembly (OMA), has commemorated World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development with a series of activities aimed at promoting skills development, innovation and entrepreneurship in the municipality.

The celebration brought together students, artisans and community members to participate in practical training programmes designed to equip them with employable skills while encouraging interest in science, engineering and technical education.

Key activities included STEAM and TVET sensitization sessions for basic and senior high school students, robotics demonstrations, and creative capacity-building workshops such as soap making, cream production and bead making. Artisans within the municipality also received training on modern trends in the automotive sector, with a focus on emerging technologies and improved diagnostic practices.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, underscored the importance of the initiative in driving local development through skills training and job creation.

“The trainings that are going to take place today are very important to the good people of Obuasi. The training of the 25 mechanics, the trainings in soap making, cream production and beads, as well as the robotics training for our students are all towards a common goal, and that is to ensure that we are equipped with skills and have the ability to create jobs for others to also take advantage,” she said.

According to her, empowering young people and artisans with practical skills remains key to tackling unemployment and strengthening the local economy.

Director-General of TCC-CIMET, Francis Davis, said the centre continues to prioritise community engagement and innovation-driven training programmes that empower people to create opportunities for themselves and others.

“Engineering plays a critical role in solving real-life problems and driving sustainable development. At TCC-CIMET, we believe that by exposing young people and artisans to practical skills and modern technologies, we can build a generation capable of creating solutions and contributing meaningfully to national development,” he said.

He added that initiatives such as the World Engineering Day activities form part of the centre’s broader mission to strengthen engineering education, technology transfer and entrepreneurship across Ghana and the West African sub-region.

The Managing Director of Electronic Suppliers and Engineering Services Limited, Mr. John Oteng-Nyame also emphasized the importance of engineering education, noting that while classroom instruction provides the theoretical foundation, effective training must also prepare students for the practical demands of industry.

“The classroom is very important because that is where we gain the knowledge that is meant to be applied when we get into the field. The field is equally important, but when you get there without the knowledge from the classroom, it becomes evident that you do not have what it takes to solve real-world problems. Every theory taught in the classroom is meant to address a problem in the real world,” he said.

As part of the training programmes, 20 participants received instruction in soap and cream production, while 14 people were trained in bead making. Additionally, 25 mechanics benefited from training on modern automotive trends and emerging technologies within the sector.

Nine persons with disabilities were also among the beneficiaries of the various training sessions, reflecting the programme’s commitment to inclusivity and equal access to skills development opportunities.

The initiative is expected to continue inspiring more young people to pursue careers in engineering and technical fields while equipping community members with practical skills that can support entrepreneurship and job creation within the municipality.

After the opening ceremony, participants moved into various groups to begin the different training sessions organized for the programme.
