TCC-CIMET Partners to Build Capacity for Mining Engineering Professionals in Africa
The TCC International Centre for Innovation, Manufacturing, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship (TCC-CIMET) is advancing efforts to strengthen mining engineering education and professional standards in Africa. In collaboration with the International Competence Centre for Mining Engineering Education (UNESCO), the National Association of Mining Engineers (Russia), and engineering bodies across the continent, TCC-CIMET is helping implement an international competencies and standards framework for mining engineering professionals.
At a roundtable discussion on “Shaping the Future of the Mining Industry: Relevant Competencies and a New Standard”, Prof. Francis Davis emphasized the vital role of young professionals and the need for globally aligned competency standards to enhance education quality, professional mobility, and recognition.
Prof. Davis presented on “Engineering Capacity and Skills Development in Africa: Overcoming the Challenges of Workforce Qualification”, highlighting digital transformation, sustainability, and the importance of a skilled workforce in driving Africa’s mining sector forward.
“The mining industry is undergoing one of the most exciting and transformative periods in its history. Digital literacy, sustainability, and innovation must define the future engineer,” he noted.
The dialogue formed part of the First Russian–Africa Raw Materials Dialogue at Saint Petersburg Mining University, which brought together representatives from over 30 African countries, including eight ministers, alongside leading scientists, policymakers, and industry actors.
As the only UNESCO Category II Centre of Excellence mandated for engineering education in Africa, TCC-CIMET reaffirmed its commitment to leading the implementation of international competency standards on the continent.
On the sidelines, TCC-CIMET engaged key partners, including Ghana’s Ambassador to Russia, the President of All Africa Universities, leaders from engineering institutions in Kenya and Nigeria, and representatives from the All-Africa Students’ Union to strengthen collaboration toward a resilient and future-ready mining workforce.
