TCC-CIMET Explores Collaboration Opportunities at Aalto University Fab Lab
The TCC International Centre for Innovation, Manufacturing, Technology Transfer, and Entrepreneurship (TCC-CIMET) is strengthening its international partnerships through a strategic engagement with the Aalto Fab Lab in Finland. This initiative aligns with TCC-CIMET’s mission to foster innovation, technology development, and entrepreneurship across Africa and beyond.
During the visit, Prof. Alexander B. Marful, Director of Business Development and Sustainability at TCC-CIMET, a UNESCO Category II Centre of Excellence, met with researchers, lab coordinators, and technical experts to explore opportunities in digital fabrication, immersive technologies, and interdisciplinary innovation for TCC-CIMET’s Smart Cities and Manufacturing Laboratory (SCiM Lab). Discussions focused on joint research projects, student exchange initiatives, and capacity-building programs.
Prof. Marful was given a guided tour of Aalto Fab Lab’s state-of-the-art prototyping equipment and advanced workflows, and participated in technical sessions with workshop masters Mr. Krisjanis Rijnieks and Mr. Solomon Embafrash, who highlighted the Lab’s operational processes, the globally recognized Fab Lab Academy, and pathways for collaboration.
Reflecting on the visit, Prof. Marful commended the Lab’s hands-on approach, emphasizing its unique integration of CAD/CAM design, electronics, programming, and system integration. He also noted that TCC-CIMET brings expertise in frugal innovation, creative problem-solving, and translating research into practical community impact.
Also present was Arc. Taru Niskanen from Aalto University’s Department of Architecture and Aalto WiTLAB, who shared insights on design-led innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
Prof. Marful expressed gratitude for Aalto Fab Lab’s willingness to collaborate in building capacity for Africa’s next generation of innovators. Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to a long-term partnership aimed at advancing creative technology research and expanding learning opportunities for students and researchers across Africa, Europe, and beyond.
