Honoring a Pioneer of Appropriate Technology: J.W. Powell (Director, TCC 1972–1987)
At a time when the world was searching for practical, human-centered solutions to development challenges, J.W. Powell led the Technology Consultancy Centre (TCC) at KNUST with vision and purpose. As the Centre’s first director, from 1972 to 1987, Powell championed the principles of appropriate technology, technology designed to meet the real needs of communities using locally available resources and skills.
His most enduring legacy? The establishment of the Intermediate Technology Transfer Unit (ITTU), a bold and innovative initiative that became a bridge between research, industry, and grassroots enterprise. Through the ITTU, TCC became a beacon for technology transfer, empowering artisans, small-scale manufacturers, and entrepreneurs with tools and techniques suited to their environments.
Today, as we navigate the complexities of sustainable development, digital transformation, and climate resilience, Powell’s work reminds us that technology must serve people first. His leadership planted seeds that continue to inspire engineering solutions grounded in context, culture, and community.
Let’s celebrate the trailblazers who laid the foundation for impactful innovation across Africa and beyond.
